Mark: Hi it’s Mark from Top Local Lead Generation and we’re here with Sheetal Gupta of Maharani Jewels in Vancouver, award winning jeweller, the Diamond Lady. How’re you doing today Sheetal?
Sheetal: I’m doing really well, thank you so much Mark.
Mark: So we’re going to talk about diamonds and value and why is purchasing a .90 carat round diamond better value than purchasing a 1 carat round diamond. We’d like to know
Sheetal: Yeah, exactly. There’s a few reasons I’m going to take you through today but every week there is a report that comes out that states the per carat value of a diamond based on it’s color and clarity. So for example, you’ve got a different price list for diamonds that are round and a different price list for diamonds that are off round. but for today, we’re going to talk about diamonds that fall into the round category. So you could have a diamond that is a .9 carat and there is a different price per carat for a diamond that falls into the .9 to .99 carat range and then a different price category per carat for a diamond that is a 1 carat to a 1.49. So though the difference visually is not huge between a .9 and a 1 carat, there is a massive price difference. So you could have, all other variables being the same, but the only difference being the carat weight difference, and you could have a .9 carat that for example, is an F colour, VS1 clarity with all other aspect being the same; and then you have a 1 carat diamond and the difference is up to 65%. So by just knowing this difference you could save a lot of money and go for a .9 carat.
The other piece is that visually the difference between a 1 carat and a .9 carat is virtually impossible to detect. So you need to see at least a difference of 20% in carat weight to notice somewhat of a difference in size. So 20% of 1 carat is .8. So when you’ve got a few diamonds ranging between .8 and 1 carat and you place them side to side, visually you won’t be able to notice much of a difference, but the value difference is in the thousands, so that’s another thing to look at. So definitely is you are looking to save money and to get great value but still not compromise on quality then definitely go for a .9 carat and still get a diamond that looks like a 1 carat but not have to pay as much.
